Robin van Erven Dorens (1964) is an independent filmmaker from Amsterdam. He graduated from het Gemeentelijk gymnasium Hilversum in 1983, started studies in chemistry and philosophy but decided to become a filmmaker after his military service as a tank commander. He started his career working as an assistant with feature films and commercials and producing and directing his own projects. He made several documentaries.
The documentary Ik ben een zwarte beeldhouwer (“I am a black sculptor, 2020”) is a poetic quest for the imagination and inspiration of the Amsterdam artist Nelson Carrilho, who expresses his African origins with his bronze monumental sculptures. In this time of polarisation, Carrilho feels the pain of the colonial past and transforms this pain into healing art. The film won the Jury Special Award in the Art and Artisans program of the Festival Cuture Cinema 2021 in Mumbai.
In Groove We Trust (2014) about the influential funk-jazz musician and entertainer Joseph Bowie and his relation to Buddhism. This film was broadcast on NPO 2 by the ‘Boeddhistische Omroep”
Islands of the Soul (2011) is a portrait of the visual artist and poet Hilarius Hofstede who is struggling with bipolar disease.
Lagonda (2004) is a documentary about a car once owned by his grandfather, which was confiscated after World War ll. Lagonda was broadcast by NPS in ‘Het uur van de wolf’ and relayed many times on TV Noord Holland and on the Dutch History Channel. The film was shown at IDFA and the script for Lagonda won the Stimuleringsfondsprijs.
Together with journalist Tijn Sadée he interviewed Michael Gorbatsjov and made a short documentary Russian Enigma (2000) which was selected for the Rotterdam Film festival. He produced and directed many corporate video’s for companies and institutions, directed commercials and was a producer or director of several Dutch television shows.
As a viola da gamba player Robin took courses and masterclasses with Wieland Kuyken, Charles Medlam, Robert Smith, Cristiaan Norde and performed in many concerts with different ensembles.
